There's rarely ambient noise on the evening news when the desk-based newscaster speaks. Daytime sessions are all crackledy with paper shuffles and light laffs after the NBA scores. At night, I imagine panning extra wide and seeing the black, air-conditioned maw of the empty studio behind the talking heads, where bitten styrofoam coffee cups sit on stepladders and power cords filigree the floor.
