here and now cow

A good friend of mine was the kind of little kid that was filled-to-spilling with "so much potential"...which is a compliment when you're knee-high and new to the world, burning ladybugs with a purse-pilfered Bic, etc. But there's an invisible age tripline when the "so much potential" becomes a backbiter, an unkept promise, a thing muttered with raised eyebrows and pursed, worried lips. My friend felt his own line-crossing a few years back, so I make sure to amend it to "so much po...tassium. In your bananas. How do you do it?"

But really, I was thinking about how I know quite a few people (and they happen to be menfolk) who live in a nostalgia/projected future sandwich. There is no elegant present, no here-and-now creamy center at all. Just stories for/about old boytimes, and a lot of In Two Years, In Five, In Eight...I would like to remind them that the space between the ( ) isn't such a bad place to be. Promise. And that they have so, so much potential ♥
