Small Plane Crashes, Kills 5 in Texas
U.S. National - AP

By T.A. BADGER, Associated Press Writer

SAN ANTONIO - A small plane crashed Sunday near an apartment complex for seniors, knocking a hole in one unit with its wreckage. One passenger was confirmed dead, but a federal official said it appeared four other people aboard the aircraft also were killed.

The Piper Navajo was headed to San Antonio International Airport when it crashed about three miles away shortly after 5 p.m., said John Clabes, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

"He pulled out of the approach and disappeared off our radar," Clabes said.

One death on the plane had been confirmed. "Our flight standards investigator on the scene said we can assume there are four additional fatalities," Clabes said.

No one on the ground was hit by the wreckage, although "good-sized pieces" of the plane were on the floor of the woman's apartment, District Fire Chief Randy Jenkins said.
